Did you know that climate change makes new glacier lakes in the mountains, and makes existing lakes more dangerous? Communities in the Indian Himalayan region, face a looming and catastrophic threat from glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

Our team aims to address the risks of GLOFs by enhancing the scientific understanding of glacial lakes, by placing local voices at the heart of hazard mitigation strategies and creating valuable data to scientifically understand the risks, and facilitate learning and strategy with local stakeholders – including government – to assure timely and best-practice GLOF mitigation to prevent tragedy.
We will use a series of locally-appropriate science techniques to create a baseline for GLOF risk at the most critical lakes in Ladakh, to reduce disaster risk for the people most effected, create best-practice strategy, pilot automated GLOF syphoning, and build a local network with the capacity to monitor and address these critical disasters now and in the future.
